WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to the first "Extended" event following DroidCon NYC. If you attended DroidCon in person, step up to the mic and give us a lightning talk on what you saw/heard that inspired you the most. Plus announcements from organizers as we settle in for the kickoff.

6:40 PM

DCNYC18 BY THE NUMBERS / Kevin Galligan & Natalie Krivenko (DroidCon NYC)

In 2018 DroidConNYC had a record number of paper submissions (300+) and expanded its program to include an enterprise track and explore multi-platform development. So where is mobile development headed and what did the conference stats tell us? DCNYC18 organizers Kevin Galligan & Natalie Krivenko have insights to share!

7:00 PM

APPLIED FIREBASE MLKIT / Tyler Eastman (Walmart Labs)

Learn about the exciting new Firebase MLKit SDK, discover how top apps are leveraging it to solve real-world problems, and follow along as Tyler walks us through how he used ML Kit to create a real version of the "Hotdog / Not-Hotdog" app from the popular Silicon Valley TV Series on HBO.

7:30 PM

"OH THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!" - ANDROID NAVIGATION: WHAT'S NEW AND HOW DOES IT WORK? / Britt Barak (Nexmo)

You’re building your app, you’re out on your way, activity to fragment, you’ll add deeplinks one day. Notifications, transitions, you pass arguments, too. Just a messy piece of cake, for a developer like you! But then the user hits back, or up or away — What should happen? You’re lost! The road starts to sway! They talked about launch modes, affinity, activity stack... We will deep-dive to those, then learn the new stuff from Jetpack!

8:00 PM

EXTENDING YOUR ANDROID FRONTENDS WITH AUTO-SCALING KOTLIN BACKENDS / Wisdom D'Almeida (Google)

Kotlin isn't just a new language for Android development! It can be used anywhere you would use Java. This includes developing powerful backends or micro services that extend your Android front-ends. In this talk, we will look at Kotlin on the server side and show you how to quickly deploy Kotlin autoscaling backends by demoing a Kotlin Android app connected to a Kotlin backend (hosted on App Engine Standard) that acts as a Cloud Function. Our application will also integrate some of the most popular Google Cloud APIs. Finally, we will present you some Google resources to get started with Kotlin on the server side.

8:30 PM

NETWORKING & DRINKS

Unwind with drinks and conversation with fellow Android enthusiasts and experts.

9:00 PM
